Architecture, the silent artist shaping our world, is a discipline that marries creativity and functionality. Behind every stunning structure stands an architect, orchestrating the synthesis of form and purpose. In this brief exploration, we'll unravel the essence of architecture, demystify the role of an architect, delve into the credentials required for the profession, and explore the invaluable reasons for collaborating with an architect in both the commercial and residential realms.
Tools of the trade: an architectural scale, and a pencil.
WHAT IS ARCHITECTURE?
Think about the last time you stepped foot inside architecture. Well, you do it every day! At its core, architecture is the art and science of designing and creating the built environment. It encompasses everything from the grandeur of skyscrapers to the intimate spaces we call home. Architects conceptualize and bring to life structures that harmonize with their surroundings while meeting the diverse needs of the people who inhabit them.
THE ARCHITECT'S ROLE
Architects are the visionaries and problem-solvers of the built world. Our role extends beyond mere design; we are entrusted with translating abstract ideas into tangible, functional, and aesthetically pleasing spaces. Architects navigate the intricate balance between artistic expression and practical considerations, incorporating elements such as spatial arrangements, materials, building codes, and environmental sustainability into our designs. We then take these designs and create a set of scaled, dimensioned, and detailed drawings so our ideas can physically come to life.

CREDENTIALS OF AN ARCHITECT
Becoming an architect is not an easy task. And to be clear, the title of 'Architect' is not handed out to just anyone. Architects must become licensed to practice, which is a rigorous journey of education, practical experience, and (the dreaded) exams. Architects typically hold a professional degree in architecture from an accredited institution. Additionally, aspiring architects must obtain 3,740 hours of professional experience, accruing hands-on experience under the mentorship of seasoned and licensed professionals. The final step to gaining the title of Architect involves passing the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) to become a licensed architect. The AREs are a series of six exams covering the technical and professional topics of the practice of architecture. But wait, we're not there yet! Many jurisdictions, such as South Dakota, have an additional exam that they require for licensure in that state. Okay, that's the end. That's what it takes to call yourself an Architect!
